Harmful ingredients lurking in chemical cleaners

While it’s good to know the ingredients in your cleaning products, it’s equally important to recognize the harmful ones that trigger health problems. Here are some you should watch out for:

Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are commonly used in personal care and cleaning products. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)
Quaternary ammonium compounds are used as disinfectants and/or preservatives in common fabric softeners and functions as a softening agent. Quats can also be formaldehyde-releasing agents that have been associated with multiple health problems including allergies & irritation (skin, eye, lung), asthma, and fertility issues.

Parabens are preservatives used in a wide variety of cosmetic and personal care products to prevent the growth of microbes. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals can be absorbed through skin, blood and the digestive system.

Optical Brighteners
A substance in many detergents to give your clothes that white glow, and make you think it’s cleaner. However, in contact with your skin, it could cause allergic reactions.

Synthetic Fragrances (also known as Perfume/Parfum)
One of the top known allergens, synthetic fragrances can cause allergic reactions, rashes, and chemical sensitivity. Usually details of what chemicals are used in the fragrance/perfume/parfum are not disclosed.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Though a highly effective surfactant and foaming agent, SLES is a petrochemical based surfactant and has been known to irritate eyes, skin, and lungs, especially with long-term use. SLES has ethoxide, which is a petrochemical component, in its molecule.

Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS)
Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) is one of the most important petrochemical anionic surfactant in household laundry and cleaning products. But LAS is an irritant to skin and eyes and is hard to biodegrade without oxygen.

Secondary Alkane Sulfonate (SAS)
Another anionic surfactant, SAS is also derived from petrochemicals and can cause environmental and health concerns, similar to LAS.

Alcohol Ethoxylates (AE)
Alcohol Ethoxylates (AE) are a major class of non-ionic surfactants widely used in laundry detergents. However, the process of ethoxylation can be contaminated with ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen and 1,4-dioxane, a probable human carcinogen. Alcohol Ethoxylate is listed on labels, but, without testing for its by-products, there is no way to know if a product contains residual ethylene oxide or 1,4-dioxane.

1,4-dioxane is primarily generated through a process called ethoxylation, in which ethylene oxide, a known breast carcinogen, is added to other chemicals to make them less harsh. Certain household products, including some products containing SLES, have been found to contain traces of 1,4-dioxane. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen.

Most of us are familiar with this common cleaning ingredient. Used to brighten and disinfect fabrics, chlorine can actually be more harmful than we imagine. Not only does it damage clothes in the long run, it could even cause severe burns to our skin and eyes, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema (trapped fluid in the lungs that restrict breathing), and more.

If too much phosphate is present in water, algae and weeds can grow rapidly. This could choke the waterway and use up large amounts of precious oxygen causing severe harm to fish and aquatic organisms.

Used as solvents in fragrances of personal care and cleaning products, phthalates are known as “endocrine disruptors” due to their effects on our body’s hormones. In high dosages, they can affect your liver, kidneys, lungs, and even the reproductive system.

Hydrochloric Acid
While it’s highly effective in cleaning tough stains, they contain corrosive properties that could cause severe burns when in contact with your skin and eyes. Great care should be taken with this ingredient.

Isothiazolinones are preservatives used in cosmetic and household products to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. These are synthetic preservatives which have been restricted in certain markets as they are known irritants and allergens. In 2016, the Dermatitis Academy launched a call to action for patients to report their isothiazolinone allergy to the FDA. Methylisothiazolinone was the American Contact Dermatitis Society Contact Allergen of the Year for 2013. Benzisothiazolinone was classified as irritant for skin, eyes and lungs by the Environmental Working Group and classified as irritant by European Union.

Fermented Fruit Fluid
The base of our products is our naturally fermented pineapple fluid. Our fermentation technology brings out the power of pineapples, to form natural enzymes such as bromelain, numerous organic acids and bio surfactants. These cleaning agents become part of our formula that helps remove dirt, stains and bad smell.

Alkyl Polyglycoside
A natural cleaning agent that’s derived from plants, this biodegradable ingredient enhances the formation of foams in detergents and is suitable for sensitive skin.

Capryly/Decyl Glucoside
A mild and gentle surfactant that we use as a natural cleaning agent to keep your home clean.

Citric Acid
This ingredient works as a pH adjuster, helping to keep the pH level neutral.

A natural moisturizing agent that can soothe dry skin.

Glyceryl Oleate
Natural softening agent and emulsifier derived from coconut and sunflower oil.

Hypoallergenic Fragrance
We apply extra care in selecting the right fragrance for our scented fabric softeners. We made sure that the fragrance we chose did not contain any known allergens listed in T.R.U.E Tests (the US FDA-approved allergy patch test). With exception to our scented fabric softeners, our products use natural essential oils only.

Lactic Acid
Natural acid used as a pH adjuster.

Lauryl Glucoside
Similar to Alkyl Polyglycoside, Lauryl glucoside – a mild surfactant – has excellent foaming capacity.

Natural Essential Oil
Essential oils are liquid extracts of various plants. Our products use natural essential oils only, with the exception of our scented fabric softeners (which use hypoallergenic fragrance).

Natural Betaine(Trimethylglycine, Glycine betaine)
An amino-acid derivative that naturally occurs in plants, Natural Betaine is a highly purified anhydrous betaine, extracted from sugar beet. It is a 100% bio-based natural surfactant that acts as a moisturizing agent and is suitable for sensitive skin.

Soy Lecithin
A natural softening agent made from soy to provide smoothness in fabric.

Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate
Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate is used as a natural emulsifier with excellent solubilizing properties. It is a PEG-free surfactant that is a non-irritant on the skin and does not contribute to nitrosamine formation.

Potassium Lauroyl Glycinate
Potassium Lauroyl Glycinate is an anionic surfactant made from plants.

Potassium Sorbate
A preservative used in a variety of food, drinks and personal care products to prevent the growth of microorganisms.

Sodium Benzoate
A preservative used in a variety of food, drinks and personal care products to prevent the growth of microorganisms.

Polyaminopropyl Biguanide
A cosmetic grade preservative used to prevent the growth of microorganisms.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(planted based)
Our Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a plant-based anionic surfactant commonly used as a cleaning agent in household cleaning products.

Tocopherol or Vitamin E is known for its moisturizing and antioxidant properties, and can help prevent damage to skin.

Xanthan Gum
Xanthan Gum is a common ingredient found in both cosmetic and food products.
It is a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent.
